Experts at the unveiling of Bahman Kazemi's New Books:
Bahman Kazemi's Researches, to keep Iranian Folk and Ritual Music

In the session of reviewing Iranian folk and ritual music during the late century and unveiling of the three new books of Bahman Kazemi titled as : "Arab Folk music", "Turkmen Folk Music" and "Iranian Music in the Last century"; the present experts emphasized on the importance of recording the different aspects of culture, moreover they recognized the researches and new books of Kazemi as an innovative event in the field of cultural research.
IBNA: The reviewing meeting of Iranian folk and ritual music during the late century along with the unveiling of three new books published by Iranian Academy of the Arts, was held on Thursday, May 10 with Ali Moalem Damghani, Amir Ashraf Airyanpour, Bahman kazemi and Carlo Kreti, at 14-15 pm., in the main hall of House of Literati at the book fair.
At the beginning of the meeting MA Moalem Damghani said: some topics of art have faced with indifference in our country. Most of intellectual works regarding Iranian art and its various branches have been done by others. However, Dr. Bahman Kazemi's works on Iranian music are among the first studies on Iranian arts done by Iranians themselves.
Then Moalem described the mythical forms as well as the first music in the East and Greece and then spoke briefly about Arabian and Turkoman Music and said: we are looking for researches and books such as those of Dr. Kazemi to be published by Iranian Academy of the Arts; through which we will show to the world that it is Iran and Orient where human civilization had been first originated.
Then, Amir Ashraf Ariyanpour said: there are a lot of individuals who have researched on Persian folk music, but what have been done by Bahman Kazemi is like a jewel and worth to be read. As a music scholar and teacher I expect the educated audience at the meeting, to obtain and read these books.
He added: Our country enjoys various kinds of art, since many various races live in the country with their particular customs, tradition sand manners, thus it would be excellent for us to be familiar with their arts especially with their music.
Following his speech Ariyanpour introduced the previous studies, scholars and their works in this field such as Gregorian and Mohammad Taghi Masoudiyeh and said: I have read all the previous papers on the Iranian Folk Music, hence I can say what Kazemi has suffered in this area, have not been done by any other previous ones, and his studies are indeed unrivaled.
Following the meeting, Carlo Kreti, an Italian Iranologist spoke about Iranian and the world's traditional culture as well as the researches of Bahman Kazemi, while Kazemi served as interpreter of his words. Kreti said: all the books written by Kazemi on Iranian folk and ritual music as well as those books introduced today are very important. This collection is the result of an extensive study containing images, videos and manuscripts and has also been documented with many sounds which has made it significant in this regard.
He added: studies of this kind done in recent decades, titled the modern and postmodern ones and possess special properties, are very important. TV, mass media, and internet have added to our knowledge and, sciences have been improved greatly to day; these progresses however caused losing a great deal of traditions some of which have belonged to thousand years ago.
Referring to the similarities between Iran and Italy in the present time Kreti continued: Italy has also had a lot of traditions, but nowadays most of common traditions in my youth have been lost today; and now traditions are being ruined in Iran too.
Kreti said: to prevent the decline of tradition and traditional cultures, the available samples of them such as language, theater, music and craft should now be supported. In this way, the opportunity will be provided for them to be revived again. Another point to be noted in this regard is that the local things should be supported instead of the global ones.
Referring to the historical ignorance about traditional culture among nations; this Iranologist continued his speech and said: we have to record the arts and those declining aspects of culture carefully, because if we don't do this, they will be forgotten forever. Unfortunately, this is happening to all traditional cultures in the world.
At the end Kreti said: Bahman Kazemi puts a lot of efforts to preserve Iranian traditional culture that is part of a global treasure. I believe that Iranian traditional culture is by no means belonged merely to Iranian people; rather it is considered as a piece of the world's heritage. I hope I will be here to introduce new books of Kazemi at this location next year.
At the end of the meeting, Bahman Kazemi expressing his appreciation of all those who helped his books to be prepared said: although I have spent many years of my life to investigate in the Iranian folk music, and to record its melodies to be forgotten, I should say that I am indeed an inheritor of all those professors whom I have learnt a lot during my life.
He added: The point at which I started my studies in the music filed was a book entitled" Iranian Identity in the Iranian Songs" in which I divided Iran into eight racial origins or eight ethical distinctions. One of the races was "Turkoman" and I compiled their music when I was in Turkmenistan till the year 2000. Working on Arabian music, my task was more difficult; because I had to discover the Arab World music and then compare it with that of Iranian Arabs.
Kazemi said: to do this, I reviewed the music of many regions such as Andalusia, Hejaz, Egypt, Shamat and Iraq thoroughly, and I saw that the music of Iranian Arabs is consistent with that of Iraq due to religious similarity and are both almost the same. A book titled :" Iranian Music in the Past Century" was brought to the exhibition from printing office an hour ago. Two other books with the titles: "10-volume set of Ta'ziyeh (miracle play) Manuscripts " and " Mourning and Ta'ziyeh in Iran" were supposed to be present at the exhibition, but this did not happen.
The new books of Bahman Kazemi with the titles: "Arab folk music", "Turkmen folk music" and "Iranian Music in the Last Century" have been published by the Institute for Compilation Translation and Publication of art works (text) associated with the Iranian Academy of Arts.
Interesting margin of the Meeting
Entering exhibition, Carlo Kreti had faced some problems which led him reach the meeting so late. When he was finally at the tribune to deliver his lecture said in Persian: I can also say that I was both trapped in the so-called Tehran traffic jam, and lost in the exhibition hall, but the only important thing which may remain in your minds is that I was late, so I apologize of all the participants for the delay.
