8 Mar 2011 10:39
The burial ceremony of Alenoush Terian, mother of Iran's Astrophysics was held on Monday 7th March at the Church of Saint Mary with the presence of the literati and scholars.
IBNA: Dr Alenoush Terian had donated her personal library to the National Library before she spent the last years of her life in Towhid nursing home.

Born in an Armenian family in 1920 in Tehran, Alenoush Terian graduated in physics from the University of Tehran in 1947. She began working in physics laboratories of the same university upon graduation and was elected as the chief of laboratory operations in the same year.

She continued her studies at the Sorbonne University in Paris, graduating with a degree in atmospheric physics in 1956. She returned to Iran to work as an assistant professor in thermodynamics at the University of Tehran.

Terian got a scholarship to study solar physics for four months in Germany, after which she became Iran’s first female physics professor in 1964.

In 1966, Terian became a member of the geophysics committee of Tehran University and was elected as the chief of the solar physics studies three years later.

She was one of the founders of the solar observatory of the Institute of Geophysics at the University of Tehran, where she also worked until her retirement in 1979.

Dr Terian donated her personal library including 1116 books, 902 journals and 162 dissertations and theses in Persian, Armenian and French in the fields of literature and physics to the National Library of Iran.

In an interview with IBNA, Terian had stated that she wished she could see the morning when every Iranian and even workers begin the day with a book as unfortunately the passion for reading among Iranians is so little.

"I am glad," she exclaimed, "to see that my achievements has affected the women's interest in reading and keeping on academic studies. Women – as preceptors of their children – should be well-educated."
