Tablecloth
Exterior. The yard. Night (some time passed)
[A tablecloth stretched on the terrace floor. It is in fact a Keffiyeh used instead of a tablecloth; Mehri and Ali are sitting on the sides of Keffiyeh. There are two plates, one plastic and one metal, on the cloth, a pot full of rice in the middle, two jars instead of glasses and another plate filled with conserved tuna fish. An old gun is lying on the floor near Ali. Both of them are having the last morsels. Mumbling thanks God prayers, Ali feels worried about Mehri and takes now and then glances at her. Then he picks up the gun and stares at it.]
Ali: I’ll teach you how to work with it tomorrow… But you’d better have it by your side tonight…It gives one courage.
[With an artificial smile on her lips, Mehri looks at the gun.]
Mehri: What a sight!
[Ali looks back at her, smiling. At this moment Mehri’s face shows signs of sudden pain as she takes her left side by hand.]
Ali: [worried] What’s the matter?
Mehri: [With her hand still on her side and speaking slowly]: Sometimes it aches here when I eat.
[She gets up and goes to the kitchen, Ali’s eyes fixed on her anxiously. Ali puts the gun aside, takes his boots off and approaches the bicycle. He examines the front wheel; in the meantime Mehri puts two apples in a plastic bag and enters the yard. Ali turns to Mehri.]
